Why Coolant Lines Need Different Hose Types

11/19/2025

Coolant lines require a completely different type of hose than traditional hydraulic oil systems. The primary reason is that coolant fluids are water-based, while hydraulic oils are petroleum-based. Water-based solutions can react aggressively with certain rubber compounds used in standard hydraulic hoses, causing the inner tube to soften, blister, or break down faster than expected.

Because of this, water-based coolants are highly corrosive to many hose materials if they are not specifically formulated for coolant service. This is why manufacturers recommend specialized hoses designed for glycol-based, water-based, or mixed coolants. These hoses are typically made from materials such as EPDM or silicone, which resist water absorption and prevent premature hose failure under pressure or temperature changes.

Even when the hose is correct, choosing the right fittings is equally important. Coolant lines often benefit from corrosion-resistant stainless steel adapters, including JIC fittings, ORB O-ring fittings, and NPT adapters that maintain a tight seal even with fluctuating temperatures. Titan Fittings provides a full selection of stainless components ideal for coolant systems and water-based applications.
