Data Center Liquid Cooling Basics
What is data center liquid cooling?
It moves heat away from computer chips using a circulating liquid instead of relying only on air. Coolant picks up heat at the equipment and carries it to a system that removes the heat.
What is the difference between the primary and secondary cooling loops?
The primary loop connects to the building cooling plant. The secondary loop carries controlled, clean coolant to the IT racks. A coolant distribution unit (CDU) normally transfers heat between them without mixing their fluids.
What does a coolant distribution unit do?
A CDU helps move and control coolant in the secondary loop. It commonly contains a heat exchanger, pumps, filters, sensors, and controls. Technicians should follow the site procedure when checking its status or alarms.
What are supply and return headers?
Supply headers carry cooled liquid toward the racks. Return headers take warmer liquid back toward the CDU. Check the pipe labels and drawings before connecting any branch; similar-looking pipes can have different duties.
What is a rack drop?
A rack drop is the branch connection from the large supply and return headers to an individual server rack. It commonly includes a size transition, isolation valve, flexible hose, and quick disconnect.
Which fittings are commonly used in a liquid cooling system?
Common parts include elbows to turn a line, tees to split flow, reducers to change size, adapters to join connection types, and couplings to connect equipment. Valves, hoses, and quick disconnects complete many assemblies.
Why are stainless steel fittings common?
Stainless steel resists corrosion and helps keep coolant clean. 304 and 316L are common choices. The correct grade still depends on the approved design, coolant chemistry, and service conditions.
What is the basic difference between 304 and 316L stainless steel?
Both are corrosion-resistant stainless steels. 316L generally provides additional corrosion resistance and is often selected for more demanding coolant chemistry or welded applications. Never substitute one grade for another without approval.
What are PG25 and deionized water?
PG25 is approximately 25% propylene glycol mixed with water and typically includes corrosion inhibitors. Deionized (DI) water has many dissolved ions removed. Use only the coolant specified for the facility; do not mix or top off with an unapproved fluid.
Why must O-rings and seals match the coolant?
A metal fitting can be suitable while its rubber seal is not. An incompatible seal may swell, harden, or leak. Check the specified seal material and coolant compatibility before installation; do not assume all O-rings are interchangeable.
What is an isolation ball valve used for?
It allows a branch or rack to be shut off for maintenance. A full-port valve can reduce flow restriction. A closed valve does not prove that pressure is gone: follow the approved isolation, lockout, drain, and pressure-verification steps.
Why is a flexible hose used at the rack?
It helps accommodate small alignment differences and movement between rigid piping and the rack. Confirm the hose material, bend radius, pressure rating, and end connections; do not kink, twist, or use the hose to pull parts into alignment.
What is a quick disconnect?
It is a coupling designed to join or separate coolant lines more conveniently. Some are dry-break or low-spill designs. Inspect the mating halves and seals, confirm the correct coupling type, and follow the manufacturer and site procedures before disconnecting.
What is the difference between LQC and UQD?
LQC means Large Quick Connector and is generally used for larger-flow connections such as rack drops. UQD means Universal Quick Disconnect and is generally used at server-level connections inside racks. Match the exact standard, size, and revision required by the design.
What should I check before installing a fitting?
Confirm the part number, material, thread or end-connection type, size, pressure and temperature ratings, coolant and seal compatibility, and required gasket. Inspect for scratches, damaged threads, debris, and missing seals. Use the approved tightening method and torque guidance.
What should I do if I find a coolant leak?
Treat any leak near energized equipment as urgent. Follow site emergency and escalation procedures, keep clear of electrical hazards, and notify the responsible operator. Do not tighten or disconnect a pressurized fitting. Authorized personnel should isolate, depressurize, repair, and test the connection before return to service.
